About the Author

Susan Brady Burd is a librarian who always dreamed of finding her own book amongst the shelves. Her first book The Doctoress was inspired by her journey recovering the health of her children using alternative medicine, and specifically homeopathy. She lives near Buffalo, NY with her husband and two sons where she spends the long winters reading by the fireplace and the summers biking along the shores of Lake Erie. Currently she is hard at work on a completely different historical fiction novel set in the Sixties, inspired by the work of Joan Didion.

Maybe it was the continuing grey skies, but March Maybe it was the continuing grey skies, but March felt like a bit of a reading rut, despite the number of books read. The only standout was the Newbery Award winning All the Blues in the Sky which was remarkable. When I'm in a reading slump, I usually turn to nonfiction, or a classic, or I reread an old favorite (Blue Nights). Hopefully April will be better both in terms of books and weather!

Some of the many books I read over the years while Some of the many books I read over the years while researching and writing my debut novel The Doctoress. As a librarian, I knew I needed to get the history right, not only for my main character, but for the real-life women she interacted with in her work as a doctor and as a suffragist. These are the books I turned to again and again.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was one of my favorite char Elizabeth Cady Stanton was one of my favorite characters to write about. A brilliant woman centuries ahead of her time in so many ways, yet like most of us, imperfect and flawed. It was so great to hear the author of this new biography speak about her at @hallwalls thanks to @talkingleavesbooks. An added treat was finding the name of my protagonist listed in the index!
